A Revamp In PayPal's Crypto Design System

NOTE: Limited scope. PayPal's approval for case study documentation is still processing.

In 2023, PayPal launched $PYUSD, its new stablecoin, with the aim of transforming the financial landscape.

However, behind the scenes, the design teams faced a complex challenge: a fragmented Figma system that created confusion and inefficiencies across various departments.

My mission was to address this issue and streamline the design process for PayPal's crypto initiatives.

Teams from Content, Legal, and Engineering at PayPal were often lost in a labyrinth of outdated and disorganized design files. There was no single source of truth to indicate which mockups were live, which were in development, and which were just ideas on the drawing board. This lack of clarity led to frequent miscommunications and delays.

A New Order Emerges

My role was to overhaul this chaotic system. I began by restructuring the PayPal and Venmo Figma files, spanning multiple user geographies including the UK, Luxembourg, and the USA.

This wasn’t just about tidying up; it was about creating a streamlined, systematic layout that would facilitate smooth communication across all teams.

The impact was immediate and profound.

By establishing a clear and concise library with integrated search mechanisms, I enabled teams to locate and understand the necessary files effortlessly. No more sifting through disorganized folders or grappling with outdated information.
